After the daemons are running, you should be able to:
  prompt> telnet localhost 5222
or also
  prompt> telnet `hostname` 5222
and it should connect to the port, won't print anything but you'll get
connected.

If this isn't the case, then try starting up the daemons with a -D flag,
and either try and decipher what it says or cut-n-paste it and send it
this way.
